Here’s the very funny official trailer for a documentary by Saffron Cassaday on Cyber Seniors. It’s a great thing to watch with the Luddite in your life. It shows beautifully how life-transforming the internet, and particularly social media, can be especially for older people. In a very short time the seniors featured go from being techno-phobes to cyber-seniors.
The documentary chronicles the journey of a group of colourful senior citizens, all of whom are over 75 and two in their 90s, as they discover the world of the Internet, through the guidance of teenage mentors. None of them had ever used a computer before at the beginning of the film.
Their exploration of cyber-space is catapulted to another level when 89 year-old Shura decides to create a YouTube cooking video. A spirited video competition for the most ‘views’ evolves as the cyber-seniors’ show off their hidden talents all of them wanting to win. It’s a brave and exciting new world for all of them.
The trailer is a great illustration of how generation gaps can be bridged if you just put them together! It also proves you are never too old to get ‘connected’. The trailer is really heart-warming and inspiring too if you have a technically challenged and/or challenging older person in your life.
The Cyber Seniors program was started by two teenage sisters. They came up with the idea after witnessing how cyber-communication had transformed their grandparents’ lives and brought them closer to their grandchildren. What a great idea!
