Lipstick can be such a joy at any age. A simple swipe of colour has the power to brighten our face, lift our mood, and add a touch of confidence to the day. But as our skin changes with time, we may find that our trusty old favourites no longer sit quite as well. Bleeding, feathering, and shades that once looked flattering may start to feel less so.
That doesn’t mean lipstick has to become a thing of the past. Far from it. As our natural facial colour decreases with age, adding some back in can be a game-changer!
But it means being a little more intentional about the colours we choose, the textures we prefer, and the way we apply them. The perfect lipstick can still be a playful, uplifting part of midlife and beyond – especially when we embrace what feels natural and beautiful to us now.
Here’s a guide to the best lipstick shades for older women that don’t bleed or feather, along with some tips for keeping your more mature lips feeling comfortable, nourished, and fabulous. Dry lips be gone!
Why Lipstick Behaves Differently As We Age
As skin matures, the structure around our lips changes. We may notice fine lines that weren’t there before, and our lips themselves can become a little drier or thinner. This makes it easier for creamy or glossy lipsticks to wander outside the lines.
It’s not a flaw – it’s simply part of the natural changes our bodies go through. But knowing this helps us make smarter choices about the products we use. The goal isn’t to fight these changes, but to find a great lipstick that celebrates our features while staying put.
Choosing The Right Shades
One of the biggest joys of midlife is knowing what truly suits us. When it comes to lipstick, there are no rules carved in stone – wear whatever makes you feel good. That will be a great choice and it’s all about personal preference.
But there are some shades that tend to be universally flattering on more mature skin. And of course, what season you are for clothes and makeup still impacts what colours are likely to look best and suit your personal style, though that may change slightly with age, especially as your hair color may be different now. Different skin tones will impact what makeup colors work best for you. See here for more information on colour analysis and how that changed my life! Finding the absolute right pop of color can make all the difference for mature women.
Soft Rosy Pinks
A gentle pink can give lips a fresh, healthy look without being overpowering. Rosy pinks brighten the face and add warmth, perfect for everyday wear. Look for pinks with a neutral or slightly warm undertone rather than cool, frosty shades.
Try: Burt’s Bees Satin Lipstick in Blush Basin – a beautiful, natural pink that feels light and hydrating.
Berry Tones
Berries are wonderfully versatile – think cranberry, plum, or mulberry. These shades add depth without being too harsh. They’re especially flattering in the cooler months and look elegant in both sheer and matte finishes.
Try: RMS Beauty Wild With Desire Lipstick in Brain Teaser – a flattering berry tone that feels rich but comfortable.
Warm Corals And Peaches
If you like a bit of vibrancy, corals and peaches can be beautiful. They bring a touch of sunshine to the face and are especially flattering in spring and summer. Choose softer corals rather than neon brights for a chic look.
Try: Axiology Balmie in Clementine – a cheerful coral shade that doubles as cheek colour.
Classic Reds
Yes, red lipstick is still very much on the table! The key is to choose a softer red, perhaps with a blue undertone (which can make teeth look brighter) or a warm brick red if you prefer earthy tones. Sheer reds can be a brilliant option if you want colour without too much intensity. I love the vibrant color of a good bright red lipstick. Having a bold lip really changes my mood!
Try: Ilia Beauty Color Block Lipstick in Flame – a bold yet wearable red that stays put without drying lips.
Neutral Nudes
A nude lip can be elegant and understated, but it’s important to pick a nude that doesn’t wash you out. Go for a shade a touch deeper than your natural lip colour with a hint of pink or peach. Beige nudes can sometimes look flat, so adding warmth is key.
Try: Kjaer Weis Lipstick in Believe – a mauve-rose nude that flatters without looking too pale.
What To Avoid
While there are no hard and fast rules, some shades are less forgiving as we age:
- Frosted or glittery lipsticks tend to emphasise fine lines.
- Very dark browns or blacks can look harsh and drain colour from the face.
- Overly glossy finishes are more likely to feather.
That said, if you love them – wear them! Confidence is always the best shade of all.
Tips To Prevent Feathering And Bleeding
Choosing the right shade is only half the battle. Here’s how to keep your lipstick looking neat and polished all day, and out of any lip lines:
- Prep your lips.
Exfoliate gently with a soft cloth or lip scrub to smooth away dry skin. Follow with a nourishing balm – something with shea butter, coconut oil, or jojoba works wonders. - Use a lip liner.
A liner in a shade close to your natural lip colour creates a barrier that helps keep lipstick in place. You don’t need to overdraw – just softly trace your natural line.Â
Try: Ilia Lip Sketch Hydrating Crayon for a clean, hydrating liner. - Opt for creamy or satin finishes.
Matte lipsticks can be drying, and gloss can bleed more easily. A creamy or satin finish is often the sweet spot – comfortable and long-lasting without migrating. If lip products staying put is really an issue, you could also try a lip primer. - Blot and layer.
Apply one coat of lipstick, blot gently with a tissue, then add a second coat. This helps the colour stay put. - Try a lipstick sealer or setting powder.
If you need extra staying power, lightly dusting a translucent powder over tissue-covered lips can lock in colour without drying them out.
Natural And Nourishing Lipsticks
Since I’m a fan of keeping things as natural as possible, I always encourage checking the ingredients list on your lipstick. Some conventional lipsticks contain parabens, synthetic dyes, or petroleum-based ingredients. While not everyone is sensitive to these, I prefer products that nourish lips as well as beautify them. I use the Yuka app on my phone to scan the bar codes of products in store before buying – I’m sure the shop assistants think I’m rather strange, but I like to know what’s in the products I use.
Here are a few natural, feather-proof options worth trying for older lips:
Ilia Beauty – Color Block Lipstick (Flame, Rosette): creamy, long-lasting, and full of nourishing oils.

RMS Beaty – Wild With Desire Lipstick (Brain Teaser, Pretty Vacant): moisturising and bold.

Axiology – Balmies (Raspberry, Clementine): eco-friendly and multi-use.

Burt’s Bees – Satin Lipstick (Blush Basin, Ruby Ripple): affordable and widely available.

Kjaer Weis – Lipstick (Adore, Believe): luxury organic shades in sustainable packaging.

100% Pure – Cocoa Butter Matte Lipstick (Marrakesh, Plum Wine): fruit-pigmented, hydrating matte finish.
These brands prove that natural lipsticks can still offer rich colour, comfort, and staying power without unnecessary chemicals. Look for a hydrating lipstick for that extra level of comfort. I almost always carry a Burt’s Bees tinted lip balm with me – a good choice for hydration and colour on the go. And I’ll often layer lipstick on top of lip balm.
Embracing Lipstick As Self-Expression
Lipstick isn’t just about appearance. It can be a form of self-expression, a little reminder of our power and individuality. Whether it’s a bold red for a night out, soft nude colors for a day at work, or a coral that makes you feel like summer sunshine – the most important thing is how it makes you feel.
Midlife and beyond is the perfect time to play with colour, experiment with new shades, and rediscover the joy of makeup on our own terms. No rules, no pressure – just choices that make us feel good.
The best lipstick shades for older women are the ones that make us feel vibrant, comfortable, and true to ourselves. Soft pinks, berries, corals, reds, and nudes can all be flattering choices, especially when paired with a good lip care routine and feather-proof formulas.
Above all, lipstick should be fun. It’s not about hiding anything or clinging to youth – it’s about celebrating where we are now and adding a splash of colour to our lives.
So go ahead, swipe on that shade you’ve been eyeing. Because a favorite lipstick, like life, is always better when we wear it boldly.
