Guidelines for writers

Do you have something you’re passionate about that you’d like to write about? Or something to get off your chest? Want to write an anonymous letter to someone? We’d love to provide a platform for your words.

We’re a community site with a lot of our content generated by our readers. We’re delighted when someone wants to write for us – here are a few guidelines to consider.

Our tone is informal, thought-provoking, inspirational and irreverent! We provide content to empower our readers and highlight issues/topics with which they may not yet have engaged. We endeavour to add to the debate. We share a lot of content  we like, both our own and other people’s, on Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest, for example, and we would expect to promote articles written for the website there and in our newsletter.

We write about a wide range of subjects – check out our existing content to see what we cover – and we’re always looking for topics of interest and relevance to our readers who are predominantly 40+. That doesn’t mean the article needs to be about women 40+ or 40+ issues, rather it can be any topic that a woman 40+ might read.  We’re not focused on parenting issues and these will be covered only briefly on Mutton Club.

If you have an idea for an article, please get in touch. If you have an article already written, please submit it. We prefer original content but will also publish articles that have been published elsewhere if they’re good enough. Copyright will of course remain with you, but we retain the editorial right to modify your article to make it fit with the rest of the site’s content if required.

Our articles are generally between 900 and 2000 words long, and if the quality is good, we prefer longer rather than shorter articles. There’s no guarantee that we’ll publish what you’ve submitted. If you want to test out your writing style and content first before submitting a full article, please do. Be sure to check out the content on the site to get a good idea of what we like.

When submitting a pitch or an article, please also include a short bio that would go alongside your article. If we decide to use the article, we’ll need a head shot photo too. Please submit any article in Word with images sent separately. If you have a high quality image we can use to head the post that’s great. It will need to be landscape, high res and at least 1200 px wide.

Please note that we usually have a rather full editorial calendar and it may be some time before your article is published. But if you hear from us that it will be published, then we will publish it. Chasing us to get it published sooner may make us change our minds!

We’re looking for regular writers so if you would like to be considered for more than one article, please let us know.  We don’t pay our writers, but in most cases we’re happy to feature your blog/site/cause in return for an article. That said, we don’t usually publish articles that are overly promotional themselves. If you’re interested in sponsored opportunities or advertising, please email  info at themuttonclub.com.
